With sword in hand, the guardian stands watch at the forest gate.  The arch in this fantasy piece was created in the darkroom by blending a reverse image with the normal view.  This technique often produces unintentional images akin to Rorschach ink blots.  What can be seen in the background, or what people think they see, has led to different interpretations of this image.
